EX Balance
1 Object, so this seemed easy:
This one was a little difficult with large blocks of object:
This is out of balance (most of these seem to be) but there is still an appeal to it:
What a mess!:
So in theory, this is too empty on the right?
Aha! This image is balanced! Interesting. Even though the men are under exposed, the balance still gives the image a...
EX Focal lengths and different viewpoints
I did this exercise a few times to experiment, swapping between 18mm and 200mm.

2: This one was not as successful. I could get close enough to the windows without being stung.
.

3: This was strange. After taking the 200mm image, I could get myself into a position to replicate the image accurately at close range:

4: I like the difference in angles here, it...
EX Focal Lengths
I started at the widest on my 18-200mm. The Nikon has a 1.5 crop so 18 x 1.5 is 27mm for comparing to a 35mm Film camera lens view:
The next mark on the lens is 24mm which is 24 x 1.5 = 36mm:
The next is 35mm (35 x 1.5 = 52.5mm):
I thought I took the next one at 50mm on the lens but the EXIF meta data says 52mm so I must have over-shot or slipped slightly (52 x 1.5 = 78mm)

EX A sequence of composition
I had to do this exercise twice. The first just ended up as a bad approach with things in the way and no alternative route. Plus I think my shooting angle was wrong.
Attempt 1:
Approaching the sunlight was a bad choice. The auto settings were going nuts! I tried to move around to the side:
As I moved, my niece kept moving in and out of shot. I initially tried to include her but it...
EX Objects in different positions in the frame
Naturally Centred:
A little off centre:
To the right:
At the edge of the frame:
I feel that the second image, a little off centre, works best. It’s again, not too heavy in the centre, which has a stark feel, and no too far to the edge, which looks like an accidental inclusion in the frame!
The first, centred, image makes the background feel too overpowering, almost....
EX Fitting the frame to the subject
‘Normal’:

Tight Fit:
Fill the frame:
Wide:
After playing with the cropping tool I decided on this view:
Can’t express it in words well but the width lengthens the image in a natural way and the positioning frames the bike naturally without too much weight in the centre.
EX Panning with different shutter speeds

I feel that 1/30 was producing too much motion blur for my taste. My preferred image was the one below. Not overly blurred and not clear but enough of a balance with clear faces and natural poses. The blurred foot is a nice touch I think.
EX Shutter Speeds
To Start, 1/4000:

1/2000:
1/640:
1/250, Now we’re starting to see a little motion blur but its very slight
1/125, more motion blur:
1/80, lots of blur!
1/40:
1/25:
At 1/10 the image could barely be seen as the day was too bright and the camera aperture/ISO couldn’t compensate (it’s only an old Nikon D40).
I asked my bicycle model to pedal faster...
EX Focus at different apertures
1) At f/1.8:
The limit of focus is around the foreground mannequin head only
2) At f/8:
The limit of sharp focus envelopes the whole foreground mannequin .
3) At f/22:
Both are in focus and so is the curtain! The bricks are almost in focus too. The weak ISO performance is letting it down otherwise I think the sharp range would be visible to the plant pot.
EX Focus with a set aperture

I prefer the third. The first feels like there is something in my eye and in the way of the image. The second also has this effect but is preferable and the third feels like the flowers are there as the foreground with a gently blurred background.
EX Focal Length, Angle of View
Strangely my zoom lens looked equal to my eye at around 100m (?) I was expecting around 34mm - from the 1.5 crop (33.33 x 1.5 = 50mm).
Maybe my personal view is a little more ‘zoomy’ than my expectation. Not actually sure where I picked up those expectations:

0.5m from the eye.
The wide view was extremely wide (it’s an 18-200 lens). I had to hold the image...
